PROCESS

  • Conducted initial reasearch on various technology to compliment the client requirements.

  • Designed concepts that helped the team to envision the project as a user would see it when developed.

  • Conducted several user testing sessions.

    • Our target demographic was 2nd-5th grades (8-11 yrs. old) students. Designing an interactive experience for this age group was a challenge in itself.

  • Designed surveys asking teachers about their requirements.

    • Based on which I came up with initial design prototypes. This being a classroom experience, the teacher involvement was also very important.

  • Scheduled weekly meetings with advisors and client.

    • As a producer maintaining the team's vision and following the client's requirements was very important. I made sure that the team had balanced work flow meeting deadlines

  • Reviewed the code to help implement the interaction design

    • Working with an interdisciplinary team of programmers and artists involves a lot on understanding about both of those fields. My background in IT proved beneficial for programmers. I was able to provide help by .

PLAYTESTS

Conducting playtests is very important in such projects. We conducted several playtests with different age demographics and then finally we conducted our playtest with the students of Mountainview Elementary School, Morgantown, WV. At this time we were unsure about the target demographic.

What we learnt: Kids from k-1st grade were uncomfortable with the unique gyroscope mechanic and often preferred to sit, while kids from 2nd-5th grade were enjoying the application and wanted more fish in the world.

INTERACTION DESIGN

  • Navigation Interaction

    • As we were using the gyroscope of the tablet to navigate, an intuitive interaction design was important especially for kids.

  • Character Reactions

    • As the experience involved lots of fish and corals. The fish reacts to the user touch and a small fun fact pops up.

    • A second tap on the fish will reveal a surprize reaction animation

  • Camera In-Game

    • Users can also click pictures as they explore to capture moments during their experience.

  • Quests Mechanic

    • To solve the replayability issue and along with free exploration mode these quests were designed as simple tasks on the fun facts displayed for every fish.
